Abstract

This study was conducted to explore body image of the children with cerebral palsy and compare with that of normal children from Aug. 25 to Aug. 30 , 1984. The 35 convinience samples were drawn from one of the children¢¥s institutions located in Kyungki-do. But the data of 30 children were used after excluding the useless ones. The control group was consisted of 30 normal elimentary school age children drawn from one of the sunday schools in Seoul.
Machover¢¥s Draw-A-Person test and supplemental questionnairs were used, and were scored according the Otomo¢¥s scoring system. The results of the study in a statistical analysis of the t- test and frequencies were as follows :
1. Average age of the cerebral palsy (C-P) group was 14.2 years and the control group was 9.3 years. Among the C -P group, various handicaps were existed (48 % physical handicaps , 50 % speech disturbances, 67 % motor activity disturbances ).
2. The analysis of the body structures and body areas showed more distortion on "general figure" and "chin" in the C-P group with statistical significance. Though they did not show statistically significant difference between the two group, there were more occurence on the C-P group in the following areas : 1) drawing on lower and right side of the paper, 2) more mechanical and geometrical lines, 3) omissions of body parts (nose , ear, hand, leg), enlarged heads, heads without hairs, small noses, long or thin necks, squared body trunks, enlarged trunks, without hands, straightened fingers, crenched fists, different length of legs.
3. In the C-P group, C, Sch, N, and X factors were significantly higher than the normal group.
4. The analysis of answers responded to the inquiries on the DAP test showed that the C-P group identified the persons in their drawings more in action than the control group. The most disliked part of the body was the face in the C-P group. Various desires to be-come as grown - ups were expressed by the control group. However , for the C- P group, they have limited perspectives about their future. This might be interpreted as the different influence of educational, environmental, familial, and living background.
Above findings indicated more distortions of body images in the C-P group than the control group.
With these results, the following suggestions are made :
1) Further studies with larger groups of stratified samples for both C -P and control groups are recommended.
2) Further researches on the objective scoring system of qualitative to complement quantitative scoring standard are deemed necessary.
3) Studies of effective long term care plan that could build up more positive body images of the C -P children are necessary.
